Are you running out of ideas?

You would think coming up with a blog name is the easiest part of creating a blog, but if you’re not as creative as you thought, don’t worry about it! It took me a good month to come up with Moonlit Ocean! I was constantly sending my friends ideas of potential blog names, but nothing was clicking! I was slowly losing hope, but these kinds of things happen on their own. Have you ever heard of the saying expect the unexpected? My dad repeatedly told me this growing up and now I 100% believe in this saying and learned patience is very important, along with being able to react resourcefully to the cards you have been dealt. I can also very much relate this to joining Robinhood. Buying and selling at the right time is so important, you can read about how patient I need to be here

The meaning behind my name is from two different names that have always been a part of my life. First, my name Kai means “ocean” in Japanese and “sea” in Hawaiian; hence why I came up with ocean. Moonlit came from the street I grew up on, surprisingly! The street I grew up on is called Kōnane Place and in Hawaiian “kōnane” means “moonlight” or “to shine”. I also got confirmation from a friend from high school that took Hawaiian for six years! *Phew*

The meaning behind my blog name seems so simple, but honestly for someone who was trying to get her blog started ASAP, this was getting so frustrating for me. Something that helped me figure out my blog name was by writing down everything that described me on a piece of paper. Whether it has to do with food, a specific hobby you enjoy or a place you visited that you fell in love with.

Some things I wrote down that describe me include; Hawai’i, Kāne’ohe, bay, ocean, beach, paddling, soccer, Japan, cooking, fashion, mountains, architecture, designing, Italy, etc. To narrow it down, you can go into detail about why this word describes you? What about the beach do you love? The sand between your toes? Sandy toes and sun kissed skin? What about the mountains do you love? Do you love hiking during the summer only? Summer hiker sucker?

For me, I narrowed down the city I grew up in, Kāne’ohe, to the street I grew up on which was Kōnane Pl. From there I decided to google what kōnane means since I honestly never bothered looking up what it meant all my childhood even though I knew very clearly that it was a Hawaiian word. To my luck, it means moonlight. I played around with the word moonlight; moonlit, lunar glow, etc, and came up with Moonlit Ocean!

My biggest tip for finding a blog name is to draw out a bubble diagram, the center bubble saying; What Describes ME! From there, every word that describes you gets its own bubble and with each word you decide, branch out with more words that go into detail about why that word describes you!

This name did not come to my mind overnight, it took a ton of trial and error. It got to a point where I was too scared to send another name idea to a friend because I thought I was just bugging  her and I was never going to figure it out. That’s when I tried my method of writing words down and it couldn’t have been the best decision! Shortly after I was able to come up with a name that I felt proud of and my friends and family enjoyed and loved the meaning behind! I’ve attached a template of how I was really able to come up with my blog name, and if you feel like you’re running out of options, give this method a try!
